NOF and Health Reform
As the voice of 44 million Americans who either have osteoporosis or are at risk for the disease, the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) is engaged in the health care reform debate. To implement the National Action Plan for Bone Health, NOF has developed a set of principles to guide its actions and provide a framework for its advocacy on health care reform. NOF Supports Legislation to Protect Patient Access to Osteoporosis Testing
The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) and several other organizations have joined forces on Capitol Hill to gain support for the “Medicare Fracture Prevention and Osteoporosis Testing Act of 2009” S. 769/H.R. 1894 and advocate for making it part of health care reform. On June 9 and 10, 2009, patients, doctors and NOF staff visited Members of Congress to emphasize the need to protect patient access to bone density tests and an educational briefing on was held on June 10.
Support for Legislation to Protect Patient Access to Osteoporosis Testing Continues to Grow
On June 1, 2009, the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), along with 34 other patient, professional, health and community organizations sent a letter to Senators Lincoln and Snowe, and Representatives Berkley and Burgess thanking them for introducing S. 769/H.R. 1894. Bone Coalition Hosts Congressional Briefing on Capitol Hill
On May 21, 2009, the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) in conjunction with the National Coalition for Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases (Bone Coalition) hosted a congressional briefing featuring the release of the National Action Plan for Bone Health and unveiling proposed legislation to prioritize bone health through the creation of a National Bone Health Program.The briefing featured Members of Congress and medical experts as well as an osteoporosis patient and an Osteogenesis Imperfect patient. NOF Nominates Seven Patients to Serve on Research Grant Review Panels
In April, the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) nominated seven advocates for better bone health to participate in the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) review process. The CDMRP peer review panels will review research applications, including proposals in osteoporosis and related bone diseases, submitted to the fiscal year 2009 Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP). Consumer reviewers will contribute the patient perspective on the potential impact of the proposed work on improved medical care and enhanced quality of life. Learn more...
Legislation to Protect Patient Access to Osteoporosis Testing Introduced in Congress
Senators Blanche Lincoln from Arkansas and Olympia Snowe from Maine, and Representatives Shelley Berkley from the 1st District of Nevada and Michael Burgess from the 26th District of Texas, introduced the “Medicare Fracture Prevention and Osteoporosis Testing Act of 2009” (S. 769/H.R. 1894) in early April. This legislation would roll back Medicare reimbursement cuts for DXA and authorize a study of how these cuts will impact patients. Learn more...

NOF and Bone Coalition Unveil National Action Plan for Bone Health
On January 22, 2009 the National Coalition for Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases (Bone Coalition) released the National Action Plan for Bone Health: Recommendations from the Summit for a "National Action Plan for Bone Health." The Plan will help advance bone health promotion and disease prevention in the United States and is a summary of the recommendations of the June 2008 Summit for a National Action Plan for Bone Health, at which more than 150 stakeholders came together in Washington, D.C. to share their concerns for America’s bone health. NOF Partners with Local Group to Bring Advocacy Workshop to Albuquerque, New Mexico
On January 16, 2009 NOF and the New Mexico Healthy Aging Collaborative hosted a Strong Voices for Strong Bones Advocacy Training Meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico. At this workshop, attendees from around the state learned about advocating for better bone health and osteoporosis prevention and treatment with local, state and federal government officials. The meeting was well attended by health professionals; community leaders working with families and the elderly and Native American populations across the state; local and state government staff who work on public health, wellness and aging issues; and people with or at risk of osteoporosis and their families. NOF Hosts Advocacy Workshop in Anaheim, California
On December 12, 2008 NOF hosted a Strong Voices for Strong Bones Advocacy Training Meeting in Anaheim, California. At this workshop, attendees learned about advocating for better bone health and osteoporosis prevention and treatment with local, state and federal government officials. The meeting was well attended by health professionals; community leaders working on fall prevention and with the Latino, Asian and elderly populations in the Southern California region; local and state government staff who work on public health and wellness initiatives; and people with or at risk of osteoporosis and their families. World Osteoporosis Day: Stand Tall - Speak Out For Your Bones
On October 20, the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) joined bone health organizations from around the globe to celebrate World Osteoporosis Day. This year’s theme, “Stand Tall - Speak Out For Your Bones” is a call for individuals to advocate for public health policies that promote better bone health.
Since its founding 25 years ago, NOF has been a strong voice for bone health in Washington, DC and across the United States, advancing public health policies that promote access to quality care, education and prevention initiatives and bone health and osteoporosis research.

NOF Hosts Congressional Families Luncheon
NOF hosted a luncheon on September 23, 2008 for the families of Members of Congress as well as other community leaders to educate them on bone health and osteoporosis. This event featured a panel discussion moderated by Susan Dentzer, editor-in-chief of Health Affairs, and panelist speakers: Dr. Ethel S. Siris, M.D., immediate past president of NOF; Janet Hubert, actress and celebrity patient; and Rear Admiral John Eisold, M.D., attending physician of the U.S. Congress.
The event was attended by over 100 guests, including spouses of Members of Congress, senior military, political leaders and senior women leaders in the social, cultural, public policy and philanthropic communities of Washington, D.C. NOF thanks Mrs. Barbara Levin, Mrs. Jeanne Warner, Mrs. Helen Green, Mrs. Sandie Knollenberg and Mrs. Sheila Casey for co-chairing this event. Learn more ...

New Resource Focuses on the Growing Burden of Osteoporosis and Value of Medical Innovation
On July 31, the Alliance for Aging Research, in partnership with NOF, released a new volume of "The Silver BookŪ: Chronic Disease and Medical Innovation in an Aging Nation." The latest addition to the Silver Book series focuses on the most prevalent bone disease in the U.S.—osteoporosis. The volume was released at a Capitol Hill briefing which featured medical and economic experts and patients. In addition, Reps. Shelley Berkley (NV-1) and Michael Burgess (TX-26), champions of legislation to promote prevention and testing for the disease, supported the briefing. Learn more...

On June 6, NOF and the Arizona Osteoporosis Coalition hosted a Strong Voices for Strong Bones Advocacy Training Meeting in Tempe, Arizona. This forum aimed to educate attendees about advocating for better bone health and osteoporosis prevention and treatment with local, state and federal government officials. The U.S. House of Representatives Approves the "Mother’s Day Centennial Commemorative Coin Act" To Support Osteoporosis Research
On Tuesday, June 10, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass the “Mother’s Day Centennial Commemorative Coin Act” (H.R. 2268), which would authorize the U.S. Mint to produce a commemorative coin in 2014 in honor of the centennial of the Mother’s Day holiday. The proceeds from the sale of the coin will be shared by NOF and Susan G. Komen for the Cure to further their research grant programs. NOF applauds Representatives Shelley Moore Capito (WV-2) and Carolyn Maloney (NY-14) who introduced the bill, as well as the 297 cosponsors. Learn more...
U.S. House of Representatives Passes Resolution to Support the Goals and Ideals of National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month
On Thursday, May 21 the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution supporting the goals and ideals of National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month, which takes place in May. The bill, H. Res. 369, was introduced by Representative Shelley Berkley (NV-1) and helps bring attention to osteoporosis as a major public health threat for an estimated 44 million Americans.
