H.R. 3856, introduced on October 20, 2009 by Representatives Berkley (NV-1) and Burgess (TX-26), would implement some of the recommendations in the National Action Plan for Bone Health, which is the result of the U.S. Surgeon General’s Call to Action and the 2008 National Summit on Bone Health.
Unfortunately, a comprehensive national bone health program currently does not exist. Very few states fund education, public awareness and prevention programs, and these programs are threatened annually by declining state budgets.
Creating a bone health program focused on education, prevention and research would allow for national educational outreach through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); state grants for comprehensive osteoporosis and related bone disease surveillance and prevention programs; and expanded research activities at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Osteoporosis is a major health threat for an estimated 44 million Americans and osteoporosis-related fractures cost our health care system $19 billion each year. Early diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis dramatically can reduce fracture rates, generate substantial savings and improve the quality of life of millions of Americans.
Ask Congress to create a national bone health program and reduce the physical and economic burden of osteoporosis and poor bone health for millions of Americans!
