To advance bone health and osteoporosis to the top of the national healthcare agenda, NOF works with Members of Congress, as well as officials in the executive branch such as those in the Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of the President.

Health Care Reform

As the voice of 44 million Americans who either have osteoporosis or are at risk for the disease, the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) is engaged in the health care reform debate.  To implement the National Action Plan for Bone Health, NOF has developed a set of principles to guide its actions and provide a framework for its advocacy on health care reform. Surgeon General report on Bone Health and Osteoporosis
Report covers a range of important issues related to improving bone health, including: challenges in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and related bone diseases; the impact of these diseases on minority populations; promising prevention strategies; how to improve health provider education and promote public awareness; and ways to enhance access to key health services.

Summary of the recommendations of the June 2008 Summit for a National Action Plan for Bone Health.

Uniform Medicare coverage of bone density testing for most individuals at risk for osteoporosis.

Powerful Bones. Powerful Girls
This girl-friendly Web site helps girls understand how bone-strengthening activity and calcium can be a fun and important part of everyday life. The site is part of the National Bone Health Campaign, founded by the Office on Women's Health within the Department of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Osteoporosis Foundation. The site's key features include interactive games and quizzes, recipes for tasty foods with calcium, and ideas to help girls get plenty of bone-strengthening activity.
